• Prime Minister Narendra Modi, while inaugurating the second Khelo India Winter Games in Gulmarg this February, said, “This is a step towards making India’s presence felt in the international winter games arena.”
  • Making India’s presence felt in the international winter games arena is, however, a task easier said than done. So far, there has not been a single major accomplishment by Indians in world championships or the Winter Olympics. There have only been a few names like Arif, luge exponent Shiva Keshavan, speed skater Vishwaraj Jadeja, and skier Hiralal Thakur who offer or have offered a glimmer of hope for India in winter sports.
  • Winter athletes, most often, are left to fight their own battles. They lack the infrastructure, financial support and the backing of a recognised body. These pressing problems have to be dealt with for the PM’s and winter sport fraternity’s wish to come true.
