Former all-England champion and National coach P. Gopi Chand attributed P.V. Sindhu’s remarkable win in the HSBC BWF World Tour Finals in Guangzhou to mainly two reasons — being smart on court and strong on strategy.
Reaching the Asian Games final in Jakarta had been Sindhu’s best in three months, but at Guangzhou she dominated to the extent that she dropped just one game to Chinese Taipei’s Tai Tzu Ying.
Sindhu also beat Japan’s Akane Yamaguchi, Tai Tzu , USA’s Beiwen Zhang, Thailand’s Ratchanok Intanon and Japan’s Nozomi Okuhara at the Finals.
“She had played well in the previous five tournaments also. It was just that she converted everything at Guangzhou. She was fresh for the Finals.
“She was a lot more relaxed on court and played to her strength. I don’t think we needed to do anything drastic. We changed a few small things during training and she was consistent right through,” he said.
What can one expect from Sindhu in similar situations in the future?
“We are learning every time; so are the opponents. They too would have watched these matches. They would come out with plans and strategies and we will have to find the answers,” he added.
