Top seed Son Wan Ho has the measure of Sameer

P.V. Sindhu progressed to the semifinals but it was curtains for Sameer Verma at the ₹600,000 Korea Open Super Series badminton tournament on Friday.

Sindhu, the silver medallist at the recent Worlds, recovered from a mid-game crisis to stave off the challenge from World No. 19 Minatsu Mitani of Japan 21-19, 16-21, 21-10 in a quarterfinal that lasted 63 minutes.

Meets Bingjiao

The Indian will take on sixth seed He Bingjiao of China in the semifinals.

A little more than five months ago, Sameer had defeated Son Wan Ho in the opening round at the India Super Series in March but since then the Korean has climbed to the top of the world rankings. On Friday, Sameer once again tried to get across the Korean but the top seed dished out a gritty performance to beat the Indian 20-22, 21-10, 21-13 in a 69-minute duel.

The results (quarterfnals):

Women: P.V. Sindhu bt Minatsu Mitani (Jpn) 21-19, 16- 21, 21-10.

Men: Son Wan Ho (Kor) bt Sameer Verma 20-22, 21-10, 21-13.

Doubles: Takeshi Kamura & Keigo Sonoda (Jpn) bt Satwiksairaj Rankireddy & Chirag Shetty 21-14, 17-21, 21-15.
