Shergill puts on perfect show

Gurki Shergill's near-perfect showing helped him upset third-seeded Vijay Kumar in the second round of the SRF matchplay championship at the Delhi Golf Club here on Wednesday.

Shergill, seeded 30, recorded a comprehensive 5 and 3 win over former Indian Open winner Vijay to advance to the pre-quarterfinals.

“I did not miss any fairway and that really helped me,” said Shergill, who would meet Digvijay Singh in the pre-quarters.

Bad start

R. Murthy recovered from a bad start to upstage Sujjan Singh 3 and 1. Shankar Das, Sanjay Kumar and Feroz Ali Mollah were the other prominent players to be knocked out in the second round.

Meanwhile, top seeds Ashok Kumar and Mukesh Kumar sailed smoothly to make the last-16.
