Yash rallies to down Neel

Top seed Sanya Vats was teased remarkably, but bounced back from an indifferent start like a wounded tigress, and pulled through in a dramatic climax against Yoshna Singh 3-11, 11-1, 11-7, 13-11 in the under-19 girls final of the HCL 11th Indian Open junior squash championship at the Jaypee Greens Sports Complex on Saturday.

The stout left-hander, Sanya was able to assert as to why she was touted as the best junior in the country with a vibrant game and matching athleticism against an opponent who had beaten her once before, in three meetings.

In a memorable climax, in which Yoshna lost the momentum from being up 9-6 in the fourth game, but saved two championship points, Sanya was quite sharp to find an answer for everything that was thrown at her.

Eventually, Yoshna hit the tin on the third championship point, and flung her racquet in disgust, before the two players hugged each other for producing such a vibrant match.

In the boys’ under-19 final, Neel Joshi had a great start, as he saved a game-point and converted his third to pocket the first game against top seed Yash Fadte.

However, Yash stepped up his game to scotch all hopes of Neel, who charged at him physically in retaliation for having been “pushed hard” during a rally, which fetched a point penalty from the umpire, in the second game.

In the girls’ under-17 final, Vharshamithraa Dinesh of Malaysia handled top seed Ananya Dabke with poise to pull through 11-9 in the fifth game.

The trophies were presented by World Cup gold medallist shooter, Shahzar Rizvi.
