Raju, Satbir sparkle

Nagaland’s Raju and Satbir Kaur of Railways outscored more famous opponents to win gold in the men’s and women’s recurve 30m events (FITA ranking round) of the Sahara-33rd senior National archery championship at the Anna University ground here on Saturday.

The recurve 30m for both men and women had to be curtailed due to intermittent rains. Instead of the normal total of 36 arrows that are aimed at the target, it was brought down to 18.

Employed with the Indian Army, Raju came up with a score of 177 pipping London Olympian Rahul Banerjee by one point. Vaidyanath (ITBP) finished third with a tally of 173.

Though Satbir Kaur, a native of Punjab, and V. Pranitha (Chhattisgarh) scored 171 out of 180, Satbir triumphed with a higher number of x’s and 10’s — 11 to Pranitha’s 9.

Deepika Kumari of Steel Plant Sports Board had to be content with third place with a score of 169.

The results (FITA ranking round): Men: Recurve: 50m: 1. Rajib Basumatary (SSCB) 329, 2. Thenpnvoyi Swgro (Nagaland) 329, 3. Beant Singh (Tripura) 325; 30m: 1. Raju E (Mizoram) 177, 2. Rahul Banerjee (RSPB) 176, 3. Vaidyanath (ITBP) 173.

Women: 50m: 1. Dola Banerjee (RSPB) 316, 2. Deepika Kumari (SPSB) 310, 3. Satbir Kaur (RSPB) 305; 30m: 1. Satbir Kaur 171, 2. V. Pranitha (Chh) 171, 3. Deepika Kumari 169.
