Punjab boys and Kerala girls won the title in the 70th Junior National basketball championships here on Thursday.

Punjab drubbed Rajasthan 105-73 after leading 44-23 at half-time. Princepal Singh (38), the NBA academy trainee and India international, did the bulk of scoring for Punjab.

Last year’s runner-up Kerala beat Chhattisgarh 70-50 to win the girls’ title. Kerala took a commanding 17 point lead at half-time and withstood an improved show from its rival in the third and fourth quarters to complete the win.

For Kerala R. Sreekala (21) was the top-scorer and she was supported well by Ann Maria Zacharia (17).

Defending champion Tamil Nadu finished third after making short work of Uttar Pradesh 79-46.

Princepal Singh (Punjab) and Nisha Karwa (Chhattisgarh) were chosen as the MVP in the boys’ and girls’ sections respectively.

The results:

Boys: Final: Punjab 105 (Princepal Singh 38, Navakaram Singh 22, Aaman Sindhu 18, Rajan 18) bt Rajasthan 73 (Rishab Mathur 17, Rajeev Kumar 17, Jitendrakumar Sharma 14).

Third place: Uttar Pradesh 67 (Priyanshu Tomar 21, Tushal Singh 18) bt Kerala 54 (Aaron Blessen 21, Jerome Prince 10).

Girls: Final: Kerala 70 (R.Sreekala 21, Ann Maria Zacharia 17, Jomo Gejo 12, Ameesha Jose 11) bt Chhattisgarh 50 (Nisha Karwa 23).

Third place: Tamil Nadu 79 (Lakshmi Priya 26, Monica Jayaseel 17, Krithika 13, Sruthi 10) bt Uttar Pradesh 46 (Vrindha Garg 10, Akansha Singh 10).
