Paralympics will be just as good, say organisers

The success of the London Olympics and the popularity of the Olympic Park have driven demand for tickets for the Paralympic Games later this month, Mayor Boris Johnson said on Monday.

There had been “massive” demand for tickets to the Olympic Park in Stratford, east London, to coincide with the Paralympic Games from August 29 to September 9.

Culture Secretary Jeremy Hunt said that Britain had surprised “the world and itself” by the successful staging of the Olympic Games, which ended on Sunday.

“The Paralympics will be as big a surprise,” said Hunt at a news conference on Monday.

Olympic organising committee chief Sebastian Coe said there were “still a few tickets” left for the Paralympics, which would sell out quickly.

“The Paralympics are going to come home,” said Coe, recalling that the Paralympic movement was founded in Britain in 1948.

Most of the 2.5 million tickets put on sale for the 19 venues of the Paralympic Games had already been snapped up, organisers said.

The Olympic Park was closed to visitors Monday to allow organisers to adjust venues and facilities for the Paralympic Games, in which around 4,000 athletes will take part.
