Negi finishes second

November 08, 2011 01:43 am | Updated 01:43 am IST - NEW DELHI:

Grandmaster Parimarjan Negi defeated compatriot B. Adhiban and tied for the 15th Bavarian Open chess title before settling for the second spot following a four-way tie at Bad Wiessee, Germany, on Sunday.

Interestingly, in 2003, as a 10 year-old, Negi had achieved his maiden International norm at Bad Wiessee.

In the ninth and final round, a victory with the white pieces raised Negi's aggregate to 7.5 points, a tally matched by the eventual champion Alexander Graf (Germany), Robert Kempinski (Poland) and Sergei Zhigalko (Belarus). Adhiban (6.5 points) finished 21st and justified his seeding.

Negi, who lost some valuable rating points and the title in the National championship in Aurangabad last month, regained his form by being undefeated in a field of 460 players, including 32 Grandmasters.
