National u-17 chess from Oct. 24

Coimbatore: The Dr. N. Mahalingam 28th National under-17 open and girls chess championship will be held at the Kumaraguru College of Technology here from October 24 to Nov. 1.

Organised jointly by the Dr. N. Mahalingam Chess Academy and the Coimbatore District Chess Association (CDCA), the championship is returning to the city after two decades.

About 200 players are expected to participate in the event, which carries a total cash prize of ₹2,50,000. The prominent among them are last year’s champion Sai Vishwesh (Tamil Nadu) and Aakanksha Hagawane (Maharashtra), Mitrabha Guha, Arpita Mukherjee (both West Bengal), Chitlange Sakshi (Maharashtra), Jyothsna and K. Priyanka (Tamil Nadu).

But the top seeds for this year are Erigaisi Arjun (Telangana) and Chitlange Sakshi (Maharashtra) in the Open and girls category respectively. The Open section has five FIDE Masters and two Candidate Masters, while the girls category features two Women IMs, four Women FIDE Masters and two women Candidate Masters.
