It was a podium finish for Bangalore‘s motor rallyist, Varun V.Anekar, who took the second spot in the VIOS Cup One Make car race in Thailand last month. Varun, with Diljith and Akhil Rabindra qualified for the VIOS Cup event after the successful completion of the inaugural season of Etios Motor Racing (EMR) Trophy this year. Varun was quite pleased with his showing. “I am happy with the performance as this was my international debut. I qualified after finishing fifth overall and in the final race, I had a good start, and held off strong challenge from behind to finish second after 20 laps,” says the 23-year-old.

“The conditions were challenging leading up to the race weekend. There was a storm all week and we had to undergo training in Bira Circuit in Pattaya under heavy rain. Also at the racetrack at Chiang Mai, it was wet for all the practice sessions and semi-wet for the qualifying session. Only the race day was dry, which meant we had to adapt to the changing conditions quickly. Adding to that, the race was on a street circuit built around the 700th anniversary stadium in Chiang Mai, with Amco barriers on both sides, so any mistakes would mean going straight into the barriers.”

The most important factors that make a good driver, according to Varun, are a passion for the sport, confidence, guts and common sense. Looking ahead, Varun hopes to find a good sponsor who will support him to achieve bigger goals.
