Manuel Aaron’s book on history of Indian chess

In a first of its kind, India’s first International Master Manuel Aaron, along with noted chess historian Vijay D. Pandit, has written a comprehensive book on the history of Indian chess starting from 570 A.D. to the year 2010 titled “Indian Chess History.”

The book contains details of notable matches, sketches of games and annotated games of all Indian masters from Sultan Khan to Viswanathan Anand as well as many others who have had a deep impact on Indian chess.

During a discussion with a group of select journalists in the city on Friday, Aaron shared his knowledge about the history of the game in the country.

“I have combined my knowledge of chess and the history of the game that will be attractive to both the players and to people not fully familiar with the game.”

Commenting on the ongoing title showdown between Anand and Magnus Carlsen, Aaron sounded enthusiastic about the Indian’s chances. “I believe Anand can win the title this time. He seems ready to fight and push for wins, even when draw seems the most likely result.”

He also added that with a wide collection of annotated games by players, the book can serve as a very useful tool for upcoming players.

The book also has detailed results of major chess tournaments held in the country and records of all national champions in all categories. Published by Chess Mate, the book (600 pages) is available at 12, sixth main road, Kasturba Nagar, Adayar, Chennai-20 and costs Rs. 900.
