Malaysia stuns India

Sameer Verma suffered a shocking 21-13, 21-15 loss to Lee Zii Jia as India was stunned 3-2 by a young Malaysian team in a Group 1D match, jeopardising the former’s hopes of reaching the knockout stage of the Sudirman Cup mixed team championship, here on Tuesday.

The mixed doubles pair of Satwiksairaj Rankireddy and Ashwini Ponnappa produced a brilliant performance to outdo Goh Soon Huat and Lai Shevon Jemie 16-21, 21-17, 24-22 to give India a 1-0 lead. But India’s decision to field Sameer instead of K. Srikanth backfired and allowed Malaysia level the scores.

P.V. Sindhu then steamrollered Goh Jin Wei 21-12, 21-8 but the men’s doubles pair of Manu Attri and B. Sumeeth Reddy lost 22-20, 21-19 to Aaron Chia and Teo Ee Yi.

With the scores level at 2-2, Ashwini again took the court along with N. Sikki Reddy but the women’s doubles pair couldn’t get across Chow Mei Kuan and Lee Meng Yean, losing 21-11, 21-19.

India’s hopes will now rest on its next match when it takes on mighty China on Wednesday.
