India on par with Germany in quotas

May 24, 2011 01:10 am | Updated 01:10 am IST - NEW DELHI:

India finished joint eighth with Italy, with two silver and a bronze medal, in the shooting World Cup in Fort Benning, U.S., that concluded on Sunday. China topped the table with three gold, a silver and three bronze medals.

India had also secured three Olympic quota places and topped that list with Germany. Austria and Russia gathered two Olympic quota places each, from among 24 on offer, and 14 other countries including China managed to grab one each.

In the 50-metre free pistol, Amanpreet Singh was placed 31st with a score of 550. Omkar Singh who had shot an impressive 563 in the elimination round could shoot only 539 in the match and was placed 55th.

Olympic champion Jin Jong Oh of Korea outclassed Wu Xiao of China by an astonishing 9.7 point margin to take the gold.

The latter had the consolation of gaining the Olympic quota place. The second Olympic quota in the event went to the fourth-placed Pavol Kopp of Slovakia.

Karmakar, Ghalay fail

It was a disaster for India in the men's 50-metre rifle prone event, as Joydeep Karmakar and Sushil Ghalay failed to cross the elimination round, following scores of 590 and 589 respectively, and joined 46 others who could not make the main event.

Two other Indians entered in the event, Surendra Singh Rathod and Imran Hassan Khan could not make it to the competition as they did not get the US visa.

Henri Junghaenel of Germany shot a phenomenal 105.6 points in the final to take the gold and the Olympic quota place in the men's 50-metre free rifle prone event. The second quota place in the event went to Christian Planer of Austria who finished sixth, despite shooting 599 in qualification, owing to a below par fare in the final.

The fourth and last World Cup for rifle and pistol will be held in Munich, Germany, from June 18.

The results:

Men: 50m rifle prone: 1. Henri Junghaenel (Ger) 702.6 (597); 2. Sergei Martynov (Blr) 701.1 (598); 3. Nemanja Mirosavljev (Srb) 700.3 (597). 50m free pistol: 1. Jin Jong Oh (Kor) 670.0 (573); 2.
