A final-round victory over Romania’s Bogdan-Daniel Deac saw Vidit Gujrathi (7 points) take the 12th spot, the best among the Indians, in the FIDE Chess.com Grand Swiss tournament here on Monday.
Wang Hao won the title after being tied at eight points with overnight leader Fabiano Caruana. Hao, who beat David Howell in the final round, finished with a superior tie-break score. Wang Hao also qualified for the 2020 Candidates Tournament aimed at finding a challenger to Magnus Carlsen in the next World Championship match.
Hao, beneficiary of a late blunder by Howell, and Caruana, who drew with Hikaru Nakamura, received $60,000 each.
Among the Indians who reached 6.5 points, Viswanathan Anand took the 26th spot, ahead of P. Hari Krishna (33rd), S.P. Sethuraman (36th) and K. Sasikiran (41st). D. Harika emerged the best woman player.
