Gujrathi remains sole leader

GM Vidit Gujrathi got the better of IM Arghyadip Das to remain in the sole lead with 5.5 points after the seventh round of the ONGC 53rd National Premier chess championship here on Sunday. The other six boards ended in a draw.

In a Slav defence played by Arghyadip, Vidit gained a slight advantage on the 33rd move by forking his opponent’s king and rook. The two rooks versus rook and knight ending looked like a draw, when Arghyadip made a minor mistake of moving his rook instead of knight on the 43rd move. Another mistake in the very next move cost him the game. IM K. Ratnakaran failed to drive home the advantage created through a Bishop opening and had to remain content with a draw with IM P. Karthikeyan.

Karthikeyan is in the sole second position with 4.5 points.

IM P. Shyaamnikhil was in a commanding position after capitalising on a couple of mistakes by defending champion GM S.P. Sethuraman. Shyaamnikhil, however, blundered on the 53rd move forcing an exchange of queens and could not regain the advantage and had to settle for a draw after 83 moves.

After exchanging the queens on the 19th move, FM K. Praneeth Surya made a steady progress and had a good advantage until the 34th move notwithstanding GM Karthikeyan Murali having a double bishop. At this juncture, Praneeth deciding to stop the advancement of Karthikeyan’s ‘a’ and ‘b’ pawns lost his advantage and the game petered out to a draw after 56 moves. The half point was enough for Praneeth to secure his first nine-game IM norm.

The results (seventh round): Deep Sengupta (PSPB) 2 drew with M.R. Venkatesh (PSPB) 2.5; M. Shyam Sundar (AAI) 4 drew with Neelotpal Das (PSPB) 3.5; K. Praneeth Surya (Tel) 3.5 drew with Karthikeyan Murali (TN) 4; K. Ratnakaran (Rlys) 3 drew with P. Karthikeyan (Rlys) 4.5; P. Shyaamnikhil (TN) 3 drew with S.P.
