Grischuk, Judit and Neilsen hit back

September 08, 2011 12:15 am | Updated 12:15 am IST - NEW DELHI:

Alexander Grischuk defeated fellow Russian Vladimir Potkin and took their World Cup chess pre-quarterfinal clash to Thursday's rapid tiebreak games at Khanty Mansiysk, Russia.

Wednesday saw only three players — Teimour Radjabov, Peter Svidler and David Navara — enter the quarterfinals and the remaining five mini-matches end at 1-1. Grischuk, seeded six, scored the much-needed victory in 32 moves to negate the loss suffered with black pieces on Tuesday.

Similarly, Judit Polgar and Peter Heine Neilsen also bounced back from Tuesday's defeats and lived to fight another day.

The results:

\Pre-quarterfinals: Game Two: Leinier Dominguez Perez (Cub, 1) lost to Judit Polgar (Hun, 1); Vassily Ivanchuk (Ukr, 1) drew with Bu Xiangzhi (Chn, 1); David Navara (Cze, 2) bt Yaroslav Zherebukh (Ukr, 0); Ruslan Ponomariov (Ukr, 1) drew with Lazaro Bruzon (Cub, 1).
