Good start for Indians

Forty two of the 45 Indians on view won their first round in the World Youth chess championship which opened in Caldas Novas, Brazil, on Friday.

Leading medal contenders in the under-12 category, a two-time winner in the championship, Ivana Furtado and the reigning National junior champion A. Chithabaram were among the easy winners.

The results (first round): Open: Under-18: G. A. Stany bt Bezerra Natacio Goncalves (Bra); Debashis Das bt Hibiki Sakai (Jpn); Himal Gusain bt John Heinechen (Par).

Under-16: Shiven Khosla bt Juan Jose Benavente Vazquez; (Mex); Antonio Vian D'cunha bt Guillermo Flores Mendoza (Per); Sarang Ponkshe bt Vladislav Terentjev (Rus); Under-14: Girish Kosuhik drew with Karol Ulanovski (Pol); Diptyan Ghosh bt Abe Mahiro (Jap); M. Satvik lost to Ahmad Asgarizadeh (Iri).

Under-12: Aravindh Chithabaram bt Porta Campos Nicolas (Arg); Bruno Lopex (Bol) lost to M. Karthikeyan; Abhimanyu Puranik bt T. Tennakoon (Sri); Hetul Shah bt Diego Espinoza Robels (Per); Harshal Shahi bt Franco Marais (RSA).

Under-10: Mitrabha Guha drew with Duan Denner (RSA); Osorio Felipe Manojo de Souza (Bra) lost to V. S. Rathanvel; Schmidt Guilhermo Machado Lourieiro (Bra) lost to Rakesh Kumar Jena; John Burke (USA) lost to Anand Nadar; Michael Wang (USA) lost to Nitish Belurkar.

Under-8: Grigorijs Morozli (Lat) lost to Ram Arvind; Johan Kevin Alfaro (Per) lost to Ritam Nag; Corvera Choi Kemos (Mex) lost S. Sai Krishna.

Girls: Under-18: R. Visalatchi lost to Narmin Kazimova (Aze); J. Saranya bt Lumbini Ambanwela (Sri); A. Akshya bt Fagina Mustafa (Bol).

Under-16: P. V. Nandhidhaa bt Valentina Bauer (Aut); Pratyusha Bodda bt Elke Carola Huber (Aut); Larissa Alves De Lima (Bra) lost to Bala Kannama; Fang Tina Fang (Can) lost to Anjana Krishna.
