CWG 2018: Manika and Mouma stumble in the final

Manika Batra and Mouma Das looked forlorn as they fell at the final hurdle of the women’s doubles in table tennis in Gold Coast on Friday. 

Having played a major role in India’s team triumph, the two had to be satisfied with a silver medal as they lost tamely 11-5, 11-4, 11-5 to Singapore’s Tianwei Feng and Yu Mengyu.

Sutirtha Mukherjee and Pooja Sahasrabudhe went down to Malaysia Ying Ho and Karen Lyne 13-15, 7-11, 11-8, 7-11 in the bronze medal match.

In men’s singles, Sharath Kamal stayed on course for a medal as he made the last four with a hard-fought win over England’s Liam Pitchford, 9-11, 13-11, 10-12, 11-4, 11-6, 11-5.

Meanwhile in badminton, K. Srikanth, P.V. Sindhu and Saina Nehwal kept their billing intact as they made the semifinals on Friday.

In men’s singles, Srikanth polished off the challenge from Zin Rei Rayn (Singapore) 21-15, 21-12 and H.S. Prannoy was ruthless in his win over Dinuka Karunaratna (Sri Lanka) 21-13, 21-6.

Sindhu and Saina had an easy time in getting past Canadian rivals Tam Brittney (21-14, 21-17) and Rachel Honderich (21-8, 21-13) respectively. However, Ruthvika Gadde had to retire while trailing 5-9 against Kirsty Gilmour (Scotland).

Women: P.V. Sindhu bt Tam Brittney (Can) 21-14, 21-17; Saina Nehwal bt Rachel Honderich (Can) 21-8, 21-13; Ruthvika Gadde lost to Kirsty Gilmour (SCO) 9-5 retd.

Mixed doubles: Pranaav Chopra & Sikki N. Reddy lost to Chan Pang Soon & Coh Liu Ying (Mas) 21-17, 21-12; Satwik Rankireddy & Ashwini Ponnappa bt Goh Soon Huat & Shevon Jemie Lai (Mas) 21-19, 21-19.

Table tennis: Men’s singles (quarterfinals): A. Sharath Kamal bt Liam Pitchford (Eng) 9-11, 13-11, 10-12, 11-4, 11-6, 11-5; G. Sathiyan lost to Samuel Walker (Eng) 11-8, 11-8, 13-11, 17-15; Harmeet Desai lost to Aruna Quadri (Ngr) 11-9, 11-8, 11-9, 11-8. 

Doubles (semifinals): Sharath & Sathiyan bt Yew En Keon Pang & Shao Fen Ethan Poh (Sgp) 7-11, 11-5, 11-1, 11-3; Harmeet & Sanil lost to Liam Pitchford & Paul Drinkhall (Eng) 11-7, 13-11, 13-11.

Women’s doubles (final): Manika Batra & Mouma Das lost to Tianwei Feng & Yu Mengyu (Sgp) 11-5, 11-4, 11-5. 

Losers’ final: Sutritha Mukerjee & Pooja Sahasrabudhe lost to Ying Ho & Karen Lyne (Mas) 15-13, 11-7, 8-11, 11-7.

Mixed doubles (quarterfinals): Sharath & Mouma bt Zhen Wong & Mo Zhang (Can) 11-9, 11-9, 5-11, 11-5; Sathiyan & Manika bt Xue Jie Pang & Yihan Zhou (Sgp) 11-6, 12-10, 14-12; Sanil & Madhurika lost to Liam Pitchford & Tin-Tin Ho (Eng) 6-11, 11-5, 4-11, 11-7, 11-7.

Squash: Men doubles (quarterfinal): Vikram Malhotra & Ramit Tandon lost to James Declan & James Willstrop (Eng) 11-10, 8-11, 5-11.

Women’s doubles (quarterfinal): Joshna Chinappa & Dipika Pallikal bt Samantha Cornett & Nikki Todd (Can) 7-11, 11-5, 11-9.

Mixed doubles (semifinal): Saurav Ghosal & Dipika Pallikal bt Paul Coll & Joelle King (NZ) 9-11, 11-8, 11-10.
