Commonwealth chess: Meghna stuns Kunte

Asian junior silver medallist C.H. Meghna stunned ninth-seeded GM Abhijit Kunte to be the lowest-rated player among the seven leaders after three rounds of the Commonwealth chess championship here on Thursday.

Even as the top three boards ended as draws, Vishnu Prasanna, Debashis Das, V. Karthik, S. Nitin, R.R. Laxman and Pravin Thipsay maintained their all-win record to share the lead. Top seed Deep Sengupta was held by former National champion G. Akash, young Sammed Shete proved equal to Deepan Chakkravarthy and reigning National champion M.R. Lalit Babu split the point with K. Ratnakaran.

In what was the biggest surprise of the day, Meghna outwitted Kunte in their Sicilian Defence game. Following a series of exchanges, the former National champion was staring at a position where his young rival was armed with an extra rook. He resigned after playing the 38th move.
