With the fifth season of the ProKabaddi League set to begin on July 28, the Chennai franchise, co-owned by Indian cricket legend Sachin Tendulkar, has been christened ‘Tamil Thalaivas.’

Sachin announced this on Twitter, saying: “Another powerful addition to @ProKabaddi. Proud to announce our new team, @tamilthalaivas. Looking forward to an amazing season 5.” The new team will be named ‘Tamil Thalaivas’.”

K. Baskaran, the coach of the team, was happy with the name.

Thalaiva means boss. It is a common name attached to a leader. [It is] easy to say and pronounce.”

According to the coach, what the name signifies is “everybody is equal. Everybody is a leader in his own right.

In our team, each has equal responsibility [hence Thalaivas]. Players are glad [about the name],” he said.

It was speculated the franchise could be named Tamil Nadu Blasters as the Indian Super League football team co-owned by the famous batsman has been named Kerala Blasters. But it turned out to be wrong.

While the league will begin on July 28 in Hyderabad, the home matches will be held from September 29 to October 5 at the Nehru Indoor Stadium here.
