Ashwini Ponappa says that the focus will not be only on the number of events that she is going to take part with her partner N. Sikki Reddy but also on the quality of matches they play in 2019 — the year of Olympics qualifying cycle.
“It is not going to be only about taking part in all tournaments — big and small — to improve our rankings. The whole endeavour will be for improved performances next year,” said the 29-year-old Ashwini in a chat with The Hindu .
Looking ahead
“This year has been better than the previous one as we won medals in big events like the CWG, Asiad. We hope the next year will be even better. To achieve our goals, I have some definite plans especially with the target of winning an Olympic medal,” she said.
“I am not just looking at merely qualifying and be a three-time Olympian. The goal is to win a medal. We know what we should to realise that dream,” the the two-time CWG gold medallist said.
On Sikki, Ashwini felt that there was a better understanding between them, especially towards the end of the year.
“Especially the rotations on court and partnership off court too. Importantly, we are in tune with our common goals — to win as many titles as possible,” she said.
“We are aware that it is not going to be easy. The preparations have to be different for Olympics for sure. The support has been really good from every quarter, including ONGC. The onus, now, is on us — the players,” said Ashwini.
No complaints
“Generally, there is nothing to complain about support for doubles if you look at the increased number of combinations from India doing really well,” she said.
On the PBL, Ashwini said that it was a wonderful concept giving many opportunities for everyone.
“We have great support system from my franchisee Awadhe Warriors. There is no scope to complain. We hope to have a great season this time around,” she said.
But, Ashwini added that she is disappointed at women’s doubles not being part of the PBL match-schedule. “It would have been great if it had featured in the PBL too,” she said.
