In order to receive the prestigious Rajiv Gandhi Khel Ratna Award from President Pratibha Patil on August 29, ace boxer Vijender Singh has postponed his departure to Milan for the World championships.

Instead of travelling to Milan with the rest of the Indian team on August 27, the Olympic bronze medal-winning pugilist and coach Jaydev Bisht will now catch the flight on August 29 night.

Vijender has been chosen for the Khel Ratna Award, while Bisht has been named for the Dronacharya Award.

The Indian Boxing Federation had requested the Union Sports Ministry to allow Vijender to go with the team. However, the federation finally left the decision to the boxer, who preferred to stay back for the awards function.

“He gets less time to acclimatise. But he is keen to receive the award from the President. He felt he can manage and he is the best judge. After all, he should box with a free mind,” the Secretary General of the Indian Boxing Federation, P.K. Muralidharan Raja, said.

Vijender and Bisht will reach Milan on August 30. The World championships start on September 1 and the weighing-in is on August 31.
