An unbeaten Viswanathan Anand finished runner-up to Russia’s Vladimir Kramnik in the Zurich Chess Club’s 200th Anniversary rapid chess tournament in Zurich on Sunday.
Eight players — Veselin Topalov (Bulgaria), Anand, Kramnik, Ruslan Ponomariov (Russia), Judit Polgar (Hungary), Anatoly Karpov (Russia), Alexander Khalifman (Russia) and Werner Hug (Switzerland) — took part in the one-day commemorative event organised by the world’s oldest chess club.
Kramnik won with five points, half a point ahead of Anand. Topalov and Khalifman shared the third spot with four points each.
Anand defeated Karpov in the second round and Hug in the fifth while drawing the rest. Kramnik won the last round against Karpov to surge ahead of Anand. The Russian’s other victories came against Topalov and Khalifman.
The standings: 1. Kramnik (5 points), 2. Anand (4.5), 3-4. Topalov, Ponomariov (4 each), 5. Khalifman (3), 6-8. Judit, Hug and Karpov (2.5 each).
