Indians dominate recurve section

As expected, India's men and women archers stayed ahead of the field in recurve and held the second spots in the compound sections after the ranking rounds on the opening day of the International archery test event for the Commonwealth Games at the Yamuna Sports Complex here on Tuesday.

On a day when low wind was strong enough to prevent good scoring, Indian men occupied six of the top seven spots in individual recurve with Tarundeep Rai leading the way with a score of 668 out of 720. He was followed closely by Rahul Banerjee (667) and Kapil (665).

The Indian women could not have done better. Headed by Rimil Buruily (663), the Indians occupied the top eight places in the 23-player field after the rankings were determined for the knockout phase.

However, in the compound section, the Indian men and women could not top the ranking rounds, neither in the team nor in the individual section.

Chief coach Limba Ram was candid in stating, “I expected better scores on this day but I am sure, our archers will get better with each day. Only if we had trained at this venue for a week, we would have done better. But I am still hopeful of India winning six (out of eight) gold medals.”

The results (ranking round): Men: Team Recurve: 1. India (1992 points), 2. Malaysia (1941), 3. Scotland (1881), 4. England (1844), 5. Wales (1751), 6. Jersey (1654).
