Ghotra upstages Ghei, enters semifinal

Randhir Singh Ghotra upstaged Gaurav Ghei and then prevailed over Navtez Singh to gate-crash into the semifinals of the SRF matchplay golf championship at the Delhi Golf Club course here on Friday.

Ghotra defeated Ghei 3 and 2 before getting past Navtez 2 and 1 to set up a semifinal showdown with 12th seed Vinod Kumar.

Vinod stopped Mohammad Islam's run after being one up in the quarterfinals. Earlier in the day, Vinod had scored a similar victory over fifth seed Harendra Gupta.

From the lower half of the draw, the results came as per seedings. Second seed and defending champion Ashok Kumar defeated Rafick Ali and Ali Sher to reach the semifinal.

Third seed Shamim Khan survived a close call against Chiragh Kumar before winning on the 19th hole. In the quarterfinals, Shamim raced away to a 6 and 4 victory over Raju Ali Mollah.

The results: Quarterfinals: Randhir Singh Ghotra bt Navtez Singh 2 and 1; Vinod Kumar bt Mohammad Islam 1 up; Ashok Kumar bt Ali Sher 1 up; Shamim Khan bt Raju Ali Mollah 6 and 4.

Pre-quarterfinals: Navtez bt R. Srinivas 1 up; Ghotra bt Gaurav Ghei 3 and 2; Islam bt Rajiv Datar 1 up; Vinod Kumar bt Harendra Gupta 2 and 1; Ashok bt Rafick Ali 2 and 1; Ali Sher bt Ranjit Singh 3 and 2; Shamim bt Chiragh Kumar on the 19th hole; Raju Ali Mollah bt R. Murthy 4 and 2.

Semifinal line-up: Randhir Singh Ghotra-Vinod Kumar; Ashok Kumar v Shamim Khan.
