Dipa Karmakar begins gold quest in artistic gymnastics event

Indian women archers team loses to Russia in the quarter finals; Indian eves draw hockey game with Japan, 2-2; Heena Sidhu shot out of the Games.

Welcome to our coverage of the second day of the Rio Games. A scorching world record, a horrific leg break and bomb and bullet scares made for a hectic first day as the Rio Olympics swung into action. Vietnam and Thailand won their first ever Olympic gold medals and there was joy for teenage American markswoman Ginny Thrasher, who snared the first gold of the Games on Saturday.

There are 14 golds up for grabs on Sunday, including four swimming finals and the women’s side of a grueling road cycling race completed by the men on Saturday. The first medal is expected to come in the 10-meter air pistol women’s final. Other sports also handing out golds include weightlifting, diving, judo, archery and fencing.

0115 hrs: Dipa Karmakar remains in the hunt for a place in the Olympic vault finals after finishing 6th in the qualifiers.

The Tripura girl, who is the country’s first woman gymnast to qualify for the Olympics, managed to perform her much-appreciated Produnova vault cleanly to secure 14.850 points after two attempts.

Dipa secured 7.000 on difficulty and 8.1 on execution in her first attempt. Her score for difficulty was a tad lower at 6.000 in the second attempt.

She landed low on her Produnova vault in the first attempt, while her second vault was a Tsuk double full twist with step to the side.

The Indian was sixth in the vault standings with two more sub-divisions to go. The top eight, who would make the finals, would be known after all the five sub-divisions are completed.

2133 hrs: Meanwhile, in Men's Trap Manvjit Sandhu is maintaining his spot, currently placed 14th with 46 points, and Kynan Chenai is at 16th position with the same number of points.

2055 hrs: And that's a stalemate in the Women's Hockey game with neither team willing to give any quarter. India 2-2 Japan. The two teams will get a point each for the drawn match.

2052 hrs: Savita makes a nimble-footed save.

2049 hrs: And the lack of a drag-flicker prevents India from converting the penalty corner , as the trap-and-push goes straight into the reclining body of goalie Yuka Yoshikawa. Just 5 minutes left in the match, with scores level at two goals a-piece.

2036 hrs: Savita dives low and saves a firmly-struck penalty corner.

2029 hrs: India equalises ! Lilima Minz catches a ricochet off the Japanese goalie and, as it lobs up, slam-dunks a shoulder-level ball into the goal. Score tied at 2-2 with 5 minutes left in the 3rd Quarter. Japan questioned the height, but the appeal is rejected.

2019 hrs: Japan gets a penalty corner, but fails to convert it.

2017 hrs: And Rani Rampal strikes a firm and straight shot to put India on the board. Japan leads 2-1 .

2001 hrs: And Nakashima's delicate deflection off a cross from the left finds the back of the net for a second goal and Japan have gone up 2-0 now.

1951 hrs: Indian goalie Savita Punia saves one with her right foot after a push goes through every single defender.

1947 hrs: Meanwhile Manvjit Sandhu is in 13th position in Men's Trap Shooting ; and Kynan Chenai in 27th.

1945 hrs:Japan break through with a goal in the final minute of the 1st Quarter, as Emie Nishikori slams a trapped ball in for the first goal of the match. Japan lead 1-0.

1937 hrs: India have missed a couple of chances at the net already. Chances, chances.

1930 hrs: India's Women's Hockey team, led by Sushila Chamu, takes on Myuki Nakagawa's Japanese side after having beaten them in June this year in the World League classification match to qualify for the Olympics. This is the first Indian women's team to qualify for the Olympics since 1980.
