Deep wins, shares lead

International Master Deep Sengupta continued his splendid run by upstaging ninth seed Serbia’s Grandmaster Igor Miladinovic on way to joining Tigran Gharamaian in the lead at 6.5 points after the eighth and penultimate round of the Cannes Open chess tournament at Cannes on Saturday.

Deep’s fourth successive victory has brought him closer to a possible Grandmaster norm. In the final round, Deep faces Christian Bauer, the Frenchman who defeated Arghyadip Das to reach six points.

The results (involving Indians):

Eighth round: Igor Miladinovic (Srb, 5.5) lost to Deep Sengupta (6.5); Christian Bauer (Fra, 6) bt Arghyadip Das (5); Saptarshi Roy (5) bt Roland Salvador (Phi, 4); Darko Anic (Fra, 4) lost to V. Saravanan (5).
