'Anand is an Indian'

World chess champion Viswanathan Anand being denied an honorary doctorate by the Ministry of Human Resource Development questioning his nationality evoked a strong reaction.

D.V. Sundar, Secretary, All India Chess Federation, termed the decision as ridiculous. “He (Anand) is a Padma Vibhushan. The Government of India has given several cash awards to him and he has taken part in numerous tournaments in his career representing India.

“His parents are in Chennai and he has a home here. He has a base in Madrid (Spain) because chess is played more in European countries. He is an Indian citizen first and foremost.”

Anand's parents declined to comment.
