National junior tennis from Monday

The 20th Adidas-MCC National junior (U-18) tennis championship will be held at the Madras Cricket Club from August 20 to 25.

The AITA-ranking tournament will be organised by MCC and the Tamil Nadu Tennis Association.

The championship will see 64 players each in boys and girls singles competitions while 16 teams will feature in the doubles tournaments.

In all, the MCC has received 256 entries for the championships. The tournament’s official launch was attended by MCC and TNTA dignitaries.

SRM does well

Defending champion SRM University retained the basketball title for women in Colosseum 2012 hosted by Sastra University. In cricket, SRM (men) was declared joint winner after heavy rain prevented play in the final against Bharath University

The results: Basketball: Women: Final: SRM bt SSN Engineering 75-47.

Semifinal: SRM bt King Engineering, Coimbatore 47-17; Parisutham Engineering 32-4; bt Karunya University, Coimbatore 43-19; bt Periyar Maniamai, Thanjavur 42-16; bt Sastra 35-20.

Cricket: Semifinal: SRM 135 for five in 16 overs (Bharath Shankar 81, S. Karthik 32) bt SSN Engineering 106 in 15.2 overs (Aashish Kumar three for 16).

SRM 105 for five in 12 overs (Pradeep Kumar 45, Sohail 25) bt Amritha University, Coimbatore 75 for six in 12 overs.

Ashwath shines

Ashwath Mukunthan (four for six) ensured City-II secured the first-innings lead against City-IV on the second and final day of a TNCA under-19 round-robin cricket match.

The second day between City-III and City-I was washed out.

The scores (final day):

City-III 135 for eight drew with City-I.

City-II 315 and 109 for three in 31 overs (Akshay V. Srinivasan 60 n.o.) drew with City-IV 199 in 58.4 overs (P.R. Sylvester Jayan 57, A. Venkatesh 49, R. Aravind Raj 35, Ashwath Mukunthan four for six).

Cricket trials

The Tamil Nadu Cricket Association (TNCA) will conduct open trials for city teams that will participate in the under-16 selection tournament.

Boys born on or after September 1, 1996 but not after August 31, 1998 may register with the TNCA office here at the M.A. Chidambaram Stadium on or before August 25. Registration forms are available at the office on working days between 10 a.m. and 6 p.m. Nets selection will be held on August 30 and 31 and September 1.

MOP women start well

MOP Vaishnav defeated SS Jain 25-6, 25-8 in volleyball event of the VASPO inter-collegiate tournaments for women, which commenced here on Friday.

Other results: Volleyball: WCC bt Stella Maris 25-23, 25-16; PKR Arts & Science bt Pachaiyappa’s 25-3, 25-3;

Throwball: St. Francis (Hyd) bt Queen Mary’s 15-11, 15-6; Alpha Science bt KRMMC 15-12, 15-6; SRM Easwari bt TSN 15-0, 15-0; MOP Vaishnav bt TSN 15-3, 15-11.

TN squad for SZ junior athletics meet

A contingent of 172 competitors consisting of 89 boys and 83 girls will represent Tamil Nadu in the South Zone junior athletics meet to be held at Kochi from August 20 to 22.

Those winning the top two places will be selected for the National junior inter-zone meet to be held at Pune from September 22 to 24.

Mr. T.K. Rajedran, ADGP and Secretary, Tamil Nadu Athletics Association and Mr. R. Arumugam, DIG, Vice-President TNAA, will distribute the kits and team colours to the athletes at the JN Stadium on Saturday at 10 a.m.
