Kiran Tyagi — the real winner

Following her passion: Kiran Tyagi says it felt great being in the race car.

If you thought motorsport was all about men and machines, think again, because here is a mother of three — Kiran Tyagi, who took the bold gamble to drive the LGB Formula 4 car during Ahura Racing’s ‘Talent Hunt and Driver Selection’ at the Kari Motor Speedway in Chettipalayam last week.

She gave it her best shot to be part of a team of 12 for the JK Tyre National Racing showdown, scheduled this weekend, but missed it by a whisker. But Kiran was not disappointed.

“It does not matter that I had not been picked by the team because there were others who were better than I. But, it felt great being in the race car. It was a dream-come-true for me,” Kiran told The Hindu from Pune.

“Handling kids and kitchen is what all mothers are expected to do. I did that sincerely all these years keeping my hobbies and passion aside for the family’s sake.

“But now I have decided to step out and be more adventurous because I love being that way.”

She loves challenges. “I weighed a little over 100kg about six months ago, and I brought it down to 61kg. I took it as a challenge, researched a lot, worked hard on my fitness and today everybody is surprised.”

Her motive is to inspire young women to go out and do the impossible.

“And that’s how I got to race in Coimbatore and I was pretty much convinced with my decision. My husband [Bhavishya Tyagi] was quick to oblige as well. And, today they all look at me in awe,” said the 38-year-old.

Kiran wants to race if given the chance again. “I will grab it and do one better if it comes my way.”
