The seventh edition of the JK Tyre Himalayan Drive, organised by JustSportz, ended in a rather emotional and patriotic note with the drivers, navigators and the other officials paying homage to the martyrs of the Pulwama terror strike here on Saturday night.

Quite a few drivers dedicated their wins to those who sacrificed their lives for the sake of the country, but Ajgar Ali and his co-driver Mohammed Musthafa touched the hearts of many with a surprise announcement of donating their entire prize money of ₹1 lakh to the fund that will help the families of the slain CRPF soldiers.

Two-minute silence

The entire gathering observed a two-minute silence in memory of the soldiers at the start of the prize distribution function and the dignitaries, which included the representatives of the sponsors, competitors and organisers lit candles in front of a collage of portraits of the Pulwama martyrs.

Air Commodore (retired) Agarwal, speaking on behalf of India’s armed forces, recalled his training as a fighter pilot and the commitment of soldiers to sacrifice their lives. He also recalled interacting with Wing Commander Abhinandan Varthaman who was a high school student when he was posted at an IAF base along with Abhinandan’s father Air Marshal (retired) S. Varthaman.

Big applause

But, it was three-time champion Ajgar Ali who got a big round of applause for his great gesture.

His younger brother Shaik Ibrahim, who finished fourth in the open category, also dedicated his victory to India’s armed forces and thanked the soldiers for guarding the country in the face of extreme adversities.
