Jehan Daruvala made history as he became the first Indian to score a podium finish in the FIA European F3 championship finishing second in Monza.

The 18-year-old from Mumbai is in his first season in the F3 championship, whose past graduates include current F1 drivers Max Verstappen, Lance Stroll and Esteban Ocon.

The Sahara Force India academy driver on Friday created history, becoming the first Indian to score a pole position in the championship. Driving for Carlin, Daruvala got a clean start except for a small lock up into the first chicane, and broke free from the pack to lead most of the 30-minute race.

Teammate and McLaren junior driver Lando Norris, who started second, slipped to fourth before staging a comeback and got past the Daruvala with six and half minutes left on the clock, taking the chequered flag 0.6 seconds ahead of the Indian.

In the first round in Silverstone a fortnight ago, Daruvala bagged 13 points from three races and was eighth in the championship before this race.

Races two and three will be held on Sunday.
