Narendran, Sailesh scorch the track

Chennai's S. Narendran, representing Team TVS Girling, and Red Racing's ‘hot property' Sailesh Bolisetti took the opening day's honours in the second leg of the JK Tyre National racing championship at the Kari Motor Speedway in Chettipalayam, near here, on Saturday.

Narendran edged out a fighting Ajay Kini of Wallace Sports in the opening race of the Formula Swift class, while Sailesh coasted home in style in the race for the Super Saloons.

Dream start

Ajay, second on pole, enjoyed a dream start and, for most part, looked set to take the top spot. But, Narendran, who started fifth on the grid, took the former by surprise on the straight in the 13th lap for the honour.

TVS Girling's Ameya Walavalkar, the first round winner in Chennai, fought hard as well but had to rest content with third spot.

Sailesh proved his superiority in the Super Saloon class with a thumping third straight win. The home crowd had something to cheer as veteran racer B. Vijayakumar of Prime Racing finished second followed by Siddarth Kishore of Performance Racing.

Pole for Vishnu

Chennai's Vishnu Prasad, with the best lap time of 1m15.811s, clinched the prime spot on the grid in the qualifying round for the popular Polo Cup, which is expected to bring the crowd on Sunday. The first round finishers, however, came a cropper this time around.

Saran Vikram, who stopped the clock at 1:16.045s for the second position, must thank his stars for having escaped unhurt as the brakes failed at the turn behind the media tower.

However, it is not clear whether Saran will be able to start the race as his car is damaged beyond repair overnight.

The qualifying sessions will be held early on Sunday followed by the main races.
