Indian spinners pack off South Africa

Ravindra Jadeja is the Man of the Match. Made a crucial 38 in the first innings to go with his eight wickets

M Vijay says that "till lunch on day one, it was a good pitch to bat on, but later it became slower and tougher to score runs."

India completed the formalities with more than 10 overs remaining for the day.

Once again, the Indian spinners took 9 wickets between them; Ravindra Jadeja (5 for 21), Ravichandra Ashwin (3 for 39) and Amit Mishra (1 for 26). Varun Aaron took the all-important wicket of Dean Elgar.

South Africa just could not handle the pressure exerted by the Indian bowlers and were bundled out for 109. With this victory, India leads the four-match series 1-0.

It was indeed an all-important win for Team India as they have been dominated by the Proteas in the Twenty20 Internationals (2-0) and One-day Internationals (3-2).

The next Test match starts on November 14 in Bangalore.

South Africa inching towards the 100-run mark with van Zyl and Simon Harmer playing out the spinners quite well. At the end of 34 overs, SA 93 for 6. SA still needs 125 runs to win with four wickets remaining.

During the course of the South African second innings, Ravindra Jadeja took his 50th Test wicket in 13 Tests.

By tea, India gained upper hand by dismissing five South African batsmen. In this session, seven wickets have fallen. South Africa, at tea, are 56 for 5 with van Zyl (15) and Dane Vilas (6) are at the crease.

Chasing a target of 218, South Africa could not handle the Indian spin trio. At the time of publishing, South Africa has lost their batting mainstay.

Spin duo Simon Harmer and Imran Tahir tormented India's batsmen by claiming four wickets apiece to leave South Africa needing 218 runs to win the first test on Saturday.

After part-timer Stiaan van Zyl dismissed rival captain Virat Kohli to earn the breakthrough, off-spinner Harmer (4-61) and leggie Tahir (4-48) ripped through India's middle and lower order as the hosts, resuming on 125-2, folded for 200.

For India, Cheteshwar Pujara made 77, the highest individual score in a spin-dominated first match of a four-test series.

While South Africa have a modest target to chase, the Proteas still need to better their first innings display, when they were bundled out for just 184.
