Hockey team finalised

The Indian men's hockey team for the Commonwealth Games (October 3-14) and the Asian Games (in November) was finalised on Saturday with the four-member selection committee picking just one goalkeeper in the 16-member squad.

According to sources, the team was picked by a selection committee comprising of Olympians Ajitpal Singh, Col. Balbir Singh, B.P. Govinda and Zafar Iqbal. The meeting, at Pune, was attended by chief coach Jose Brasa and assistant coach Harendra Singh.

A top Hockey India (HI) official, however, denied any knowledge of the team being picked. “As far as HI is concerned, the team would be officially announced on Monday,” he said.

The team: Bharat Chetri (gk), Dhananjay Mahadik, Sardar Singh, Prabodh Tirkey, Gurbaj Singh, Sandeep Singh, Arjun Halappa, Vikram Pillay, Ravi Pal, Bharat Chikara, Sarvanjit Singh, Danish Mujtaba, Rajpal Singh, Tushar Khandker, Shivendra Singh and Dharamvir Singh. Standbys: Adrian D'Souza, Rupinder Pal Singh, Vikas Pillay, V. S. Vinaya, Gurvinder Singh Chandi and Mandeep Antil.
