The Hindu Explains: From Savita Halappanavar to FIFA 2018

When does the FIFA World Cup begin?

The beautiful game

The FIFA World Cup 2018, arguably the world’s greatest sporting show, starts in Russia on June 14. The month-long soccer feast till July 15 will be hosted across cities, including Moscow, St Petersburg and Sochi. The opening game between Russia and Saudi Arabia will be played at Moscow’s Luzhniki Stadium, also the venue for the final. In all, 32 teams will slug it out with some of the best names in action including Argentina’s Lionel Messi, Brazil’s Neymar, Portugal’s Christiano Ronaldo, France’s Paul Pogba, Egypt’s Mo Salah, who will miss the opening match versus Uruguay because of an injury he picked up at the Champions League final in May, and a host of other stars. Defending champions Germany will look to retain the title while this might be Messi’s last chance to lift the trophy for Argentina, 2014’s runner-up. Pictures show German players training in north Italy as the countdown begins, and Argentine President Mauricio Macri talking to Messi in Buenos Aires.
