Cites the footballers tough early life and struggles

Kerala Governor Arif Mohammed Khan presented the N. Ramachandran Foundation award for social service to former Indian football captain and Arjuna awardee I.M. Vijayan at a function here on Monday.

The Governor while presenting the award said Vijayan’s tough early life and struggles should be an inspiration for any upcoming sportspersons. Praising Vijayan for turning down offers to play football abroad, the Governor said the award was also a recognition for the game of football that has made Kerala a formidable force in the country.

In his acceptance speech, Vijayan recollected his struggling days and said the turning point in his career came when he accepted the offer from former DGP M.K. Joseph to stay back to train with the Kerala Police team.

“I was lucky there were a lot of players who were more talented than me. I was only 17 at the time when I came for trails and ineligible for a government job. After the trials, I wanted to go back to Thrissur and play in the sevens football as I needed money to support the family. But M.K. Joseph sir asked me to stay back and train with the Kerala Police team and it changed the course of my career. I got the opportunity to train with the best footballers in the country and looking back it was a good decision,” he said.

Proud

Dhronacharya awardee U. Vimal Kumar said he was extremely proud and honoured to be recognised by the foundation. Vimal Kumar said that he along with Vijayan came from an era when sports was pursued more as a passion. Vimal Kumar said he had no regrets in sacrificing a seat in medical college for a career in badminton. He said it was his dream to see India emerge as a sporting power and urged the State government to improve the basic infrastructure to provide children with the opportunity to excel in sports.

Kerala Sports Minister E.P. Jayarajan also spoke on the occasion. N. Ramachandran Foundation secretary P.P. James welcomed the gathering.
