Uphill battle awaiting Australia in third straight World Cup

Fans expect an uphill battle for their Socceroos at the 2014 World Cup as Australia face a deadly draw in Brazil with a team still in a transition process.

The Aussies struggled in their qualification campaign and then were blasted 6-0 in friendlies against both France and Brazil.

That meant the sacking of coach Holger Osieck, who was replaced by Ange Postecoglou.

The Greek-Australian coach has instituted a more attractive and attacking style of play and also worked on bringing more young talent into the side.

Postecoglou’s leader is still the same, that being deputy captain Tim Cahill while Mark Bresciano, Mile Jedinak and Luke Wilkshire also provide veteran guidance.

Australia’s chances in Brazil would be better if key forward Robbie Kruse and centre back Rhys Williams were not injured and out of the World Cup.

Still, Postecoglou does have some good youngsters in the squad, including Adam Taggert, Jason Davidson and Tom Rogic.

But all the glazing in the world will not help Australia in their Group B, where they take on reigning champions Spain, Netherlands and Chile.

“We have a massive challenge in Brazil, but it’s also a great opportunity. We head into the World Cup without any fear and want to start a new chapter in our rich football history,” said Postecoglou.
