Manchester United manager Alex Ferguson is smiling again after his team’s Champions League final defeat by Barcelona - thanks to his son.

A day after Barcelona outclassed United 3-1 at Wembley, 39-year-old Darren Ferguson led lowly Peterborough to promotion to England’s second tier.

Peterborough beat Huddersfield 3-0 at Old Trafford in the League One playoff final to secure a place in next season’s League Championship - just one division below United.

Ferguson said, “I wanted to get this win to put a smile back on his face ... I’ve certainly done that, so I’m pleased and he’s delighted.”
