Marquee players unveil ISL trophy

The Hero Indian Super League trophy was unveiled in the presence of seven out of eight marquee footballers, representing the participating teams.

Chennaiyin FC’s Brazilian star Elano Blumer is yet to arrive in India, his place was taken by Mikael Silvestre on stage. Each player expressed their impressions about the event.

Italy’s famous striker and Juventus icon, Alessandro del Piero, the most celebrated among marquee players present, said: “For us it is pretty early to understand what it means to be playing football in India. We hope our presence will inspire younger players and we look forward to sharing knowledge and experience.” He is one of many crowd-pullers in Delhi Dynamos FC.

No better place

Spain World Cupper, Luis Garcia, wearing colours of Athletico de Kolkata, quipped: “I am told there is no better place to play football in India than Kolkata. Wherever we go in the city, in malls or grounds people are waiting for the ISL to begin.”

Athletico de Kolkata kicks off the event October 12 against Mumbai City FC at the Salt Lake stadium.

Others with big reputations present were Sweden’s Fredrik Ljungberg (Mumbai City FC), Spaniard Joan Capdevilla (North East United FC), Frenchmen David Trezeguet (FC Pune City) and Robert Pires (FC Goa), besides David James (Kerala Blasters FC) from England.

The trophy was unveiled by Nita Ambani, founder and chairperson of Football Sports Development.

The event is promoted by IMG-Reliance and Star Sports.
