Hyderabad made to pay for its lapses

Substitute Maximiliano Barreiro scored from the spot as NorthEast United FC registered a 1-0 win over Hyderabad FC in the Hero-ISL at the GMC Balayogi Stadium here on Wednesday.

This was Hyderabad’s third defeat in four games while the NorthEast outfit’s second win — it also has two draws — in four games helped it climb to the top of the table with eight points.

NEUFC’s Barreiro converted a penalty in the 86th minute, outsmarting Hyderabad custodian and captain Kamaljit Singh. Hyderabad FC’s S. Shankar, in an attempt to clear a close-range strike from midfielder Jaos David Leudo, saw the ball graze his right hand, resulting in the referee pointing to the spot.

NEUFC’s win was all the more creditable as it saw its star striker Asamoah Gyan limp off the field on resumption after the break. His replacement, Panagiotis Triadis, proved equal to the task.

In the early part of the contest, there were a few threatening forays from NEUFC’s Asamoah, thanks to the enterprise shown by Redeem Tlang and Reagan Singh on the right flank.

Hyderabad could have gone ahead in the 14th minute when Mohammed Yasir’s lovely through-ball from the centre went to striker Marcelo Pereira, but the latter’s cross went wide.

The result: Hyderabad FC 0 lost to NEUFC 1 (Barreiro 86-pen).
