Playing with verve and vigour, Indian Bank stunned AGORC 1-0 in a senior division match of the St. Joseph’s-Chennai Football Association league here on Saturday.
Even with half-a-dozen players who represented Tamil Nadu at the Santosh Trophy in Nagpur, AGORC played below par as it could hardly muster a co-ordinated move, or come up with many shots at the target.
The first session completely belonged to Indian Bank. In the sixth minute, IB’s Jude Felix unleased a left-footer that was fisted out on time by ’keeper Alexander. And for most of the time, IB was pressing hard with little success as its two Nigerian forwards, Oletju Joseph Abhi and Emunemo Soloman, were unable to finish.
As the contest was heading for a draw, AG’s Kali Alaudeen, who was doing a good job in the defence till then, in an attempt to clear the ball with lone striker Abhi, committed in a handball and that resulted in a penalty, which Abhi converted with glee.
The results:
Senior division: Indian Bank 1 (Oletju Joseph Abhi 80-pen) bt AGORC 0; First division: Tamil Nadu Police 3 (C. Ravi Kumar 23, V. Ranjith 50, G. Gopinath 60) bt Madona Matrix 0.
