France vows to ramp up the intensity

Pre-tournament favourites at this World Cup have struggled so far. France is no exception but at least it has a win. Les Bleus got past Australia 2-1 in their opener despite a lacklustre effort from the trio of elite strikers.

Kylian Mbappe, Antoine Griezmann and Ousmane Dembele were underwhelming against Australia.

France outshot its opponent 12-6. Griezmann had five of those attempts, Mbappe had one and Dembele played 70 minutes without a shot on goal.

Griezmann’s goal came after a penalty, the byproduct of a VAR review of a foul on the sideline.

With holder Germany losing to Mexico and Spain, Argentina and Brazil all drawing their opening games, the Peru clash on Thursday is a prime opportunity for the French to stake their claim as the team to beat in Russia.

Coach Didier Deschampscould give Olivier Giroud a start.

Kick-off: 8.30 p.m.
