“I am of course crossing my fingers for the German team, hoping they will go as far as possible,” said Ms. Merkel, who frequently attends Germany games and will fly to Brazil to watch the first game against Portugal in Salvador on Monday. “But it will be a tough struggle.”

Ms. Merkel, who made the remarks in her weekly video address, will meet Brazilian President Dilma Rousseff in Brasilia on Sunday.
