Maradona added that Argentina's players appeared tired and they might have been able to beat Germany had the game gone to penalties.

Argentine legend Diego Maradona criticised world governing body FIFA's decision to award the World Cup Golden Ball to Lionel Messi for being the best player in the tournament.

“I would give Lio heaven,” Maradona said during the De Zurda programme on Venezuelan television Telesur after the team's defeat against Germany in the World Cup final on Sunday. “But when the marketing people wish that he win something that he had not won before, then it is unfair,” Maradona said.

The 53-year-old former player who led Argentina to a World Cup victory against West Germany in 1986 added that Argentina's players appeared tired and they might have been able to beat Germany had the game gone to penalties.

Maradona himself won the Golden Ball in the 1986 tournament.
