Wigan was knocked out of English football’s League Cup by a humiliating 4-1 second-round loss at Blackpool.
Blackpool, which is mid-table in the second-tier League Championship, eased into a 3-0 halftime lead over its Premier League opponent and added a fourth goal after the break before debut-making defender Antonio Amaya struck in the last minute for a team that has conceded nine goals in two games.
Four-time League Cup winner Tottenham started its attempt to reach a third straight final with an easy 5-1 win at Doncaster, while Newcastle won 4-3 to also reach the third-round - where the winners will be joined by those Premier League sides excused from a second-round match because they are also participating in European competition.
Wigan manager Roberto Martinez rested several of his first-team regulars at Blackpool and was punished with first-half goals from Ishmel Demontagnac, Ben Burgess and Charlie Adam.
Martinez had made nine changes from the side beaten 5-0 by Manchester United on Saturday and, although he introduced star Hugo Rodallega in the second half, Gary Taylor-Fletcher made it 4-0 in the 67th minute.
Tottenham manager Harry Redknapp made seven changes to the team that continued its perfect start to the Premier League at West Ham on Sunday, but a line-up including Giovani Dos Santos, David Bentley and Roman Pavlyuchenko easily beat its League Championship opponent.
Midfielders Tom Huddlestone and Jamie O’Hara put Spurs 2-0 ahead within 11 minutes before England striker Peter Crouch headed in a cross by David Bentley. His first goal for the club made it 3-0 at halftime.
Crouch rejoined Spurs during the off-season in a 9 million pound ($14.8 million) transfer, nine years after leaving the club without having made a first-team appearance.
Bentley scored Tottenham’s fourth goal in the 52nd and Pavlyuchenko got the fifth 17 minutes later following a penalty by Doncaster.
Premier League side Stoke won 1-0 at Leyton Orient after extra time; while Newcastle rallied from 3-1 down to beat Huddersfield 4-3.
Also, West Bromwich Albion needed extra time to beat Rotherham 4-3, Carlisle won 2-0 at Bristol City and Cardiff beat Bristol Rovers 3-1.
