Spanish sports daily AS said on Sunday that Real Madrid might try to sign German playmaker Bastian Schweinsteiger.

According to AS, Schweinsteiger is on the wish list of new Real coach Jose Mourinho.

Mourinho has asked Real to sign two central midfielders from a list of four that he has given the club: Schweinsteiger, Steven Gerrard of Liverpool, Daniele De Rossi of AS Roma and Javi Martinez of Athletic Bilbao.

Bayern Munich will surely be reluctant to sell Schweinsteiger, who has been the fulcrum of their midfield since 2005. He is under contract at the Bundesliga champions until 2012.

The 25 year-old is currently with the German squad at the World Cup.

Real president Florentino Perez broke all records to splash out around 260 million euros (321.69 million dollars) on eight players last summer but his team failed to win anything.

This summer, according to the Spanish media, he is prepared to spend a similar amount in order to challenge the domestic domination of champions Barcelona.
