Barcelona went four points clear atop the Spanish Liga with a 4-1 home thrashing of lowly Tenerife.

Lionel Messi scored two more goals, bringing his league total to 31, and fellow youngsters Bojan and Pedro put away the others.

The latest win gives Barca a record-breaking 93 points from 36 games, four points more than Real, who play on Wednesday at fourth-place Mallorca.

If the whites fail to win in Palma, then the title race will be effectively over.

Pedro said: “I am very happy because these three points take us closer to the league title. I feel good physically, and I hope to continue like this in the two remaining matches.” He noted that Tenerife “played well and made things difficult for us.”

Bojan expressed the hope that Real “drop some points tomorrow — it will be a very hard game for them.” Messi put Barca ahead in the 18th minute with his 30th league goal, poking the ball home at the far post after Zlatan Ibrahimovic had headed a Dani Alves centre across goal.

Five minutes before half-time, Roman silenced the rainy Camp Nou by making it 1-1, completely against the run of play.

Veteran Barca captain Carles Puyol played a loose ball out of defence and Daniel Kome centred for Roman to calmly equalise.

The response of Barca coach Pep Guardiola was to play with just three men in defence and bring on Pedro to play alongside Messi, Ibrahimovic and Bojan. His courage was rewarded in the 64th minute when Bojan made it 2-1 with a low-angled drive, after being cleverly set up by Alves.

Messi set up Pedro for the third goal, then made it 4-1 himself in injury-time on a perfect cross from Alves.
