FIFA to beef-up security as England fan confronts Beckham

June 19, 2010 05:23 pm | Updated November 28, 2021 09:07 pm IST - Johannesburg/Cape Town:

FIFA on Saturday said it would review World Cup security measures after an England fan furious over a 0-0 draw with Algeria managed to barge into the team’s dressing room.

Media reports in England claimed that the fan confronted David Beckham — travelling with the squad despite injury — before being hustled out by stewards after the game in Cape Town on Friday.

Police made no move to arrest him.

Craig said the authorities were studying CCTV camera footage to establish how he got past security, shortly after British royals, Princes William and Harry, left the dressing room.

The English Football Association complained over the incident, which comes amid mounting disillusionment among fans of Fabio Capello’s men for managing only two draws so far from their two Group C games.

“It’s not our security people’s fault, they do a sterling job wherever they go,” the FA’s Communications Director Adrian Bevington said. “I’m sure FIFA will accept responsibility for this and we have to make sure it doesn’t happen again.” The 0-0 result, which follows a draw against the United States last week, leaves England needing victory against Slovenia on Wednesday to ensure qualification.

Striker Wayne Rooney, who has failed to find any kind of form in the tournament so far, blasted the fans who chose to vocalise their disappointment.

“Nice to see your home fans boo you, that’s loyal supporters,” he shouted at a TV camera as he walked off the pitch.
